BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - It's not often that Biloxi ranks alongside Maui and San Diego on a list of America's best beach destinations. But it just happened.

U.S. News & World Report ranked Biloxi as #5 on its list of "Best Family Beach Vacations in the USA," coming in right behind #4 Maui, HI and #6 Outer Banks, NC.

The report says even though Biloxi is best known for its casinos, there are also multiple white-sand beaches to choose from.

"Biloxi Beach offers shore-based amenities like a pier and a lighthouse, while Ship Island features pristine water and marine animals galore," the report says. "And hidden gems like the historic Beauvoir grounds pique the interests of even the most casual Civil War enthusiasts."

Biloxi topped other well-known Southern beach destinations like #7 Hilton Head, #10 Destin, and #11 Myrtle Beach.

This isn't the first time the Mississippi Gulf Coast town has landed on U.S. News & World Report's travel list. Biloxi also ranked:
